This project aims to improve the way we teach some of the most fundamental concepts of biology by replacing outdated content with curriculum materials that reflect current scientific advancements. One of the most important things we want students to learn about the nature of science is that it’s meant to be an ongoing search for understanding based on the latest evidence. We worked with expert science educators to develop an inclusive updated curriculum and test its impact on students.

This collection of NGSS-aligned high school biology lesson plans promotes inclusive, evidence-based teaching on topics like genetics and reproduction. It is designed to challenge common pseudoscientific biases with scientific rigor, and foster a welcoming STEM learning environment for all students. The four lessons include background information, slides, and student handouts that educators can implement in any order and modify to fit their particular context.

We implemented the inclusive biology lesson plans in our own STEM Center programs, and also got help from high school teachers and students around the world to test the curriculum materials in a variety of educational contexts. You can read about the impacts of the curriculum on students in our forthcoming research paper.
